Measurement and process performance

The BPM practice requires the measurement and control of process performance. Typically includes the establishment of performance goals, processes, measurement of actual performance and review of the efficiency of business processes. Measurement and performance of processes are fundamental elements in the BPM lifecycle, providing valuable information, understanding and feedback to other primary activities, such as process analysis, design and processing.

Many organizations define and measure business process performance through two main dimensions:
(1) the extent to which process goals are achieved; and
(2) the efficiency and effectiveness of the process activities.

The performance measurement can be made available to thorough management reports based on information gathered at key points in a process. Cost metrics, task completion time, financial conditions and a myriad of other metrics can be developed and used to provide decision support by management. The use of BPMS provides information systems to aid in performance monitoring and measurement processes. Some sophisticated BPMS systems to send alerts about variances in performance management processes of designated targets. Some even automatically adjust the circumstances of the case to realign activities with targets of process based on performance targets, i.e. move flow between work queues based on bottlenecks or delays.
