When to introduce BPM?
There is no single best answer to this question. But as BPM is more a Management approach, it makes sense to build the environment in this direction step by step, on the need based. Usually, small enterprises with simple processes may not need the need to do so. But as the company grows into medium size, the nuances of process management come into the fore. Usually in organizations processes are driven by people and hence naturally they remain more pre-dominantly in people’s minds; these people often can become key people too over time, just because they have all of that in mind. This is the main symptom that indicates the readiness for BPM. And other symptom can be that we notice work getting struck often in the process, causing long delays for the want of people’s approvals.
Yet another symptom is that we notice long delays in affecting IT changes in the automated processes; thereby resorting to manual overirdes.

How to introduce BPM?

For any medium and large organizations would need BPM, undoubtedly. The processes are usually of four categories - Strategic, Core, Operational and Support processes. Now where do you start and how is the question. Usually, traditional methods suggest the following sequence.
1. Measure As-Is processes
2. Analyze
3. Identify gaps
4. Design the new processes
5. Automate
6. Monitor

But in general, companies usually take a more pragmatic approach that suits business.
1. First, identify the processes with challenges affecting company’s performance visibly.
2. Automate these processes
3. Create a Process management team with clear KRA’s
4. Create process goals and SLAs
5. Identify process owners
6. Initiate process monitoring
